Blue Felt Productions is a production studio focused on documentaries about how Canadian communities change.
We gravitate towards stories that highlight individual perseverance as it comes into conflict with institutions and wider forces of change.
Blue Felt produces its own documentaries and provides productions services to collaborators. We are currently in the pre-production phase for a few new, exciting projects. We love connecting with filmmakers and community leaders. Feel free to reach out through the webform to discuss possible collaborations or ideas.
About the Founder
Founder Gareth Wasylynko began learning videography while studying city planning at Dalhousie University. There he volunteered with a production co-operative PLANifax that created short, informative videos about city planning in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After graduation, he worked with PLANifax for a year where he honed skills in visual storytelling. In 2021 PLANifax ceased operations and he began offering production services as a freelance videographer.
In 2023, he founded Blue Felt Productions and began working on his first feature documentary "Making Space: A Halifax Story", first screened in 2025 and released online in 2026.
Based in Nova Scotia and British Columbia, Founder Gareth Wasylynko's approach to filmmaking is informed by his background in city planning, as well as his curiosity for the individual efforts that shape the world we inhabit.
About Making Space
"Making Space: A Halifax Story" is a feature length documentary exploring how rapid urban development threatens vital arts spaces in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Produced from 2023-2025, it draws on archival photos, videos and in-depth interviews to offer an unvarnished narrative on the city's longstanding inability to preserve cultural space and of the contemporary fight for accessible spaces in a changing city.
Beginning in 1930 with the opening of the Capitol Theatre, it follows the rise, fall and fight for arts spaces throughout the city's history. It features the story of three spaces: The Waiting Room Theatre, 1588 Barrington (housing The Khyber and the Turret), and the Bus Stop Theatre.
